Pearl Harbour box-brownie

UPDATE:  The following article appears to be based on false information - visit here for further explanation.  I have left the article on our site because regardless of the source the photos are still spectacular.

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor , Hawaii . By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.)

The following photographs are from a sailor who was on the USS QUAPAW ATF-11O. They were found in an old box-brownie camera stored in a foot-locker. The photos are spectacular, especially given the age of the camera/film.
Observation: when you look at some of the photos where explosions are going off people appear to be just standing around looking. No running poses or hiding behind anything. This must have been some time after the actual attacks I guess. However in the 3rd pic guys are casually standing on the sub deck while right overhead a plane (I assume a Zero because I don't think we got any planes off the tarmac) appears to be coming in diving.

Thanks to DEY_THOR_USA for sending me these photos.
