Gameport support for Vista and Windows 7 32bit
Written by DEY_Scull_AUS
Wednesday, 03 February 2010
While most of us are using usb joysticks these days, there are a few stubborn bastards (like me and Karl) who refuse to give up using their old gameport joysticks.  In my case I use an old Sidewinder 1, and to my dismay microsoft no longer supports gameport controllers.  Having recently upgraded to WIndows 7, I had to revisit the problem of getting it work somehow.  There is suprisingly little information on this on the internet, in fact, many websites claiming it is simply not possible to run gameport controllers on vista or win7.

Well, it is possible, but it requires a bit of stuffing around to get it set up properly.  So for future reference (ie.the next time I reformat/install OS) I have made available a download package with all the required files and instructions.  It can be found in our downloads section .

Forum Update

Monday, 11 January 2010
Just a quick note - today I upgraded our forum to the latest version of phpbb.  If you have trouble logging in to the forum, ask for help in the chatbox (lower left, only visible when you are logged in to this site).  Or you can click on the 'Contact Us' link (left menu) and the site will pass your query on to me via email.

Enjoy the new forum, although most of its new features are related to back-end administration.  From a user's point of view you prob won't notice much difference.

February 2009 News

Well here we are, well into 2009 and jeez there have been some developments in the il2 community since I last posted some news here.  But before we get into that stuff I just wanted to say I hope everyone had a enjoyable holiday season and managed to stay safe and well and out of mischief (well...a little bit of mischief is ok!).

So what are these developments I mentioned?  In a word...MODS.  Yes, the already splintered IL2 community (is the current version 4.08 or 4.09?) has become even more splintered with the arrival of MODS for IL2.  Fortunatly, it's not all doom and gloom.  I'm as paraniod about cheaters as the next bloke, but from the way things are going, I think cheaters will be few and far between.  With version 4.09 offering game installation checks against the servers version, players can feel 99.9% sure that everyone is using the exact same version, including the same MODS.  And from what I've been experiencing, these mods are really, really good.  There are too many improvements to mention them all, but the four big ones are -
  • much better sounds for pretty much everything
  • much better cockpits, most of them hires
  • an enormous number of new flyable planes
  • several new maps of very good quality

So if you haven't already installed the community modpack, I highly recommend doing so.  It's called the Unified Installer 1.1.  It's a big download - around 2gig, and you have to be registered at the all aircraft arcade forum to be able to download it.  I suggest you read the installation instructions on the AAA forum.  One other great thing about it, it installs a version switcher which allows you to quickly change which version of IL2 you want to run ie.4.08/4.09  mods/no mods.

On the theme of mods, here is a nice piccy of the new desert modified Bf109F4.  I guess you call it the desert mod mod ;)
Thanks to Jive for the piccy.

August 2008 News

Greetings lads, just a quick news update.  Activity hasn't been as high as we've seen in the past, no doubt due to people's work hours, also some of us (myself included) have stepped back to take a break from the vigor's of front-line combat.  Recently I've been getting back into the game and am enjoying it thoroughly again.
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate a couple of members on promotions...
DEY_Elusive_UK has become a full fledged member of DEY leaving behind his RCT status and is now a Pilot.
DEY_Sunburst_NL having served loyally since his return some months ago is promoted to Warrant Officer.
Well done gents S~
Sadly I have decided to move 2nd Lt Ramrod off the active roster.  As far as I know he has been MIA for a very long time.  If anyone has seen or heard from him recently let me know.

It has escaped my attention that a newer version of Hardballs Aircraft Viewer has been available for some time.  I have added the newest version (4.08) to the downloads section of this site.  I highly recommend this program to DEY members, grab it here.

And lastly, a piccy to finish off with...

Thanks to the guys who have contributed screenies lately, including Chirpies, Chukk and Jive :).  For this month's screenie, I went for Jive's shot of this P51 surrounded by DEY.  If this poor guy wasn't sh#tting himself beforehand...he should have been ;).

Nostalgia

I recently noticed that our web hosting was running out of disk space so I thought I would do a big cleanup.  Among the many things I deleted were 29,000 junk emails (omg!!) and our old website, which was still lurking behind since the new site (ie.this one) was built.
Before deleting I thought I should take some screenshots for posterity.  Thanks again to DEY_Avenger who was the main developer responsible for the old site.
Click on read more to see the screenshots.  Also you might want to start the music player to hear the morricone track 'good, bad, and the ugly' to enhance your nostalgia experience ;).

September News

Salutations all, just a quick news update.  It's been a couple of months since the last one - I guess all you northern hemi lads have been enjoying your summer weather and as such there hasn't been as much to report on.

Sadly our long time member DEY_Dove_FIN has moved on and we wish him well in whatever he does in the future.  Our Finnish friend, affectionately known as 'the butcher', was well known for his fierce airfield raids and fearless in-the-thick-of-it dogfighting.
On a brighter note, we welcome back DEY_Sunburst_NL who has been MIA for sometime.  It's good to have you back mate and we all are looking forward to catching up with you in the air :).

DEY_Raven_UK has been in the headlines again, this time not for his unrestrained point-whoring ;-) but for being the unfortunate victim of what at this stage could be a serious bug in il2.  Numerous times he has been innocently cruising along sipping his cup of tea, looking out for his next victim, when all of a sudden KABOOM his plane explodes for no reason.  Our boys in R&D can offer no explanation, however it has been rumoured that his ground crew may have been mistakenly fueling his FW190 with ME163 nitro!

And lastly, a screenshot to finish off with, me and the pie-eater rapier returning home after a successful 38 sortie in zekes vs wildcats...

Pearl Harbour box-brownie

UPDATE:  The following article appears to be based on false information - visit here for further explanation.  I have left the article on our site because regardless of the source the photos are still spectacular.

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor , Hawaii . By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.)

The following photographs are from a sailor who was on the USS QUAPAW ATF-11O. They were found in an old box-brownie camera stored in a foot-locker. The photos are spectacular, especially given the age of the camera/film.

A bit of Aviation History - the P-59

Article submitted by DEY_THOR_USA...

p59_05.jpgThis is America's first Jet airplane - the P-59 first flown in Oct. 1942. Volunteers have spent the last 10 years restoring this airplane, and they put the wings back on last weekend just in time to be on static display at an air show this weekend. In 1942, this was a Top Secret project located at to be Edwards AFB. When the dry lake flooded, they had to transport it by road so it was disguised with a dummy wooden propeller on the front and covered with a shroud.

Hi gang, the last month has been a bit quieter than usual...well, especially for me anyway seeing as my trackir has bitten the dirt. Hopefully I'll have it replaced in the not too distant future and I look forward to getting back in the air.
On the bright side, Thor has been made a return to active duty and by all acounts is cutting up the air in his FW-190 with all the enthusiam and skill he can muster!
Just a reminder to some of you to get your profiles updated with a blurb and a piccy if you haven't already done so.
And it wouldn't be a news update without a nice piccy, this one by Thor...
